So that's a brief rundown on the USB functionality of the new Sounds Devices MixPres. You cannot use the USB or Aux inputs at the same time for the same channel input. Here's another important thing to remember. You just have to make sure that the output from whatever program you are using is set to the MixPre.
On the MixPre-3, the USB inputs can only be assigned to one of the three main inputs. On the MixPre-6, you can assign the USB inputs to channel five and six, but you need to do this via the input menu. If you want to record audio from the computer to the MixPres via USB, you press the fader knob for the channel you want the audio to go to, and then set the input to the appropriate USB input.

Once you have mic input set up properly on the MixPres, they will go to the USB output and can be seen on your Mac in a variety of ways. And for basic functionality, I was up and running literally in a matter of seconds. When I first plug the MixPre into my Mac, the computer saw it right away. So for now, just know that you cannot route things to the USB outputs like you can to the stereo output. Now, this may change in the future with a firmware update, but that's just me speculating it, I don't know for sure.
There is no USB output routing menu on the MixPres. I'm a Mac user, so the USB functionality and computer settings I'll be talking about in this video are for the Mac. For more information on this, check out my video on powering options for the MixPres. You need to make sure that you plug in both USB-A plugs into your computer. If you don't have USB-C on your computer, you'll need to use the included USB-C to two USB-A splitter cable. This will provide the adequate power in audio I/O. If your computer has USB-C on it, you can use a USB-C to USB-C cable. The USB-C port on the MixPres is the USB port that you'll need to use to interface with your computer. The Sound Devices MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 can be used as a USB interface for your computer. This is the first video in a two part series.
